Do you enjoy birds? Do you listen to birdsong with wonder and appreciation? I know for a fact that some folks don't bother to look or to listen, and one of my daughters says that she is scared of them. Go figure! Well, it doesn't really matter if you are a bird lover or not because this scribble centers on the timeless issue, is anything too small for God? Before I tell you a bird story, though, I must start with a parking space story (where this all began).
I have a friend of a friend. Her name is Madeline. She lives in a large metropolitan area and found herself driving around and around one morning, frantically looking for a place to park because she had an urgent appointment. As she got more desperate, she prayed and asked God to help her. Within seconds, a parking space opened up right before her. She literally praised the Lord all day long as she told everyone that God had come to her rescue by sending her a parking space. When our mutual friend heard the story, she made a simple reply. “I think that God expects me to find my own parking spaces.” Well, I decided to survey several of my Christian friends to get their opinions. I asked them if they would call upon God to provide a parking space or if they would think that God is too big to be “bothered” about small, trivial matters. All in all, I polled twenty people. Sixteen of my friends indicated they would pray about a parking space while four indicated that they would not. O.K. Time for the birdie tale.
I was telling another one of my church friends about this matter when she said, “Do you want to hear a crazy horse story?"
I said, "Of couse!"
It seems that this wonderful lady was home sick one day (she won’t let me use her name lest someone call her a strange petunia.) . She promised her boss that she would try to come to the office later in the day, but she fell asleep—really asleep. About noon, she was awakened by a loud tap on her window. As she looked to see what made the noise, she caught a glimpse of a large, beautiful red bird flying away from her window. She wondered if the Lord had sent that bird to get her up. She prayed and said, “Lord, if you sent that glorious bird, please send him back so I can get a really good look at him.” She waited. She waited some more. Just as she was deciding that she was going nuts, that beautiful creature came back. He stared at her. He turned his head to the right and posed, and then he turned his head to the left and posed some more. He then looked her dead in the eye, gave her window two more pecks, and flew away. She smiled and was reminded of how tenderly God watches His birds and knows when even one of them falls (Matthew 10:29, Luke 12:7). As far as she is concerned, God did send that wondrous bird.
What do you think? Is anything too small for God? He did create atoms and cells, you know. However, if you are out there finding your own parking spaces and not paying too uch attention to birds, then that is just fine. I’m sure those birds will fly right on by you as God sends them out to find those strange petunias asking for them.
